Ben Hammons, a freshman in electrical engineering, and Abdelghani Laraoui, Assistant Professor in Mechanical and Materials Engineering, work on their laser equipment. Laraoui is working to find materials that would improve the performance of quantum computing. To do this, they need to create an environment that is super cold – talking close to zero Kelvin. Laraoui said the NSF money, in part, is helping to fund the purchase of a state-of-the-art MRI that creates such cold environments. It would make UNL one of the few places in the US that this type of research could take place. October 12, 2023. Photo by Craig Chandler / University Communication.
